i have a 93 4.3 2 door vin w 4x4, i cleaned out the egr and replaced the gasket,not to mention fuel filter, gas tank, hanger assembly, and all fuel lines.it ran great for about 2 days then all of a sudden at lower idle, like when coming to a stop, it started sputtering and wanting to die again.seems like misfire or not running on all cylinders.checked spark and its good.i have already pumped 2700 bucks in this p.o.s. and i cant afford to just randomly buy parts until i get lucky and fix it.also no codes stored.any ideas?

 

the service engine light will come on but it will take a while the engine will sound like its got a heavy mis and when you try to stop the brake pedel will get really hard because of the loss of vacuum when the egr is stuck open. when you cleaned the egr did you start it with it off and let it blow all the carbon out? mine was like that for a while i cleaned the egr 3 times but the last time i found out you need to start it and it will blow a whole bunch of crap out. and try running 91 for a while i think it is helping mine not build up crap. i was told i could also block off the egr with like a pop can and cut it to the same size as the gasket and just poke a small hole in it to let it by pass some. but you wont pass emmisions with it like that. hope this helps

 

you know i think i didn't blow the dang port out, good thing you said that i would have gone out tomorrow and bought a new egr, didnt even dawn on me to do that.i may have sprayed cleaner down the hole but i never turned it over,was afraid to.thanks a lot!

 

First off, good luck to you, it sounds like you are 'half-way there" ( to finding out what ails the beast!

Secondly though, DANG it!!--LOL! I'm beginning to think that I should have stayed w./ my carbureted pre-90 rides, so I don't have to deal w./ all this emissions bull-doo-doo. EGR's; O-2's; and on and on, does it ever end? Being a Chebbie I doubt it. -heeee, heeee, heeee. Liek the guy said you can't get thru emissions when you start fiddling with them.

My '78 Jeep failed the tests due to the fact that I plugged up the egr ports int eh heads w/ big-arsed bolts, and puled the 'pos' smog pump behind the egr lines. But back in the early '80's they let you KEEP your vehicle after obtaining a waiver. No more in most states I hear and read!?

 

I had that same exact thing happen...EGR dirty. Cleaned. Two days later it was dirty and sputtering again. I took off the EGR, left it off, started my truck and revved it a couple of times real good. It was loud..and blew all kinds of dirty stuff out. I put it back on and all was well. No problems since.
