The problem is likely not the WSS, but cracked solder joint(s) on the ABS module, somewhat common. Probably easier for you to do a search on ABS to find the threads regarding how to remove the ABS module, and repair.

I did this to my '02, not difficult at all other than carefully getting the plastic cover off the electronics without breaking it. Also if you do not have soldering tools will need to find some one in your area to do it.

Good luck.

The 96 has a different ABS module than later years. Re-flowing the broken solder joints won't work on a 96 because you cannot get to the circuit board..

Glad it worked out. The solution was really 22 years in the making. Pass the word on this fix because you and me are about the only two people that know about it. My S10 is a low mileage truck (82K) and I have the car fax. Up until the truck had about 35K in mileage, it was in the shop three or four times to "check electrical system." After that, it appears they just gave up. I can't believe that GM didn't issue some sort of service campaign to address this problem, but that is the GM I've come to know and understand. My last GM was a 76 Vega! It took me until 2017 to be willing to try another.

Anyway congrats! I'm about 500 miles into my repair and I have not had a single problem. I do wish I could have the money back on all the parts and sensors I threw at it trying to fix the issue, but all's well that ends well.

Heck, me too on the money and parts. I'm positive I changed a bunch of perfectly good parts. I'm sending you a pm.
Later

Lanny, my abs light is back on. If i attempt a solder cure and mess up will i have damaged something that will make the brakes less effective than they are now?

Negative other than losing ABS which you don't have now anyway. This repair is not for the soldering novice. The part is called the EBCM. Electronic Brake Control Module. Made by Kelsey Hayes. You can buy repaired, upgraded ones on Ebay for like $60.

It's like 42 solders to undo then redo and they use a very high temp solder. They are VERY difficult to unsolder. I wouldn't even attempt it without solder wick. I've ruined probably 2 of 4 by burning out the through holes on the PCB before I figured out somebody was repairing them and selling them cheap, with a warranty. The 2 I did successfully did hold. The problem is the relay. It is on the underside of the board hence the 42 solders you have to undo to flip the board. Once to the relay, the 15A relay is usually replaced with a 20A. (amp)
