Bolt pattern is 5 x 4.75. You will want around 6" of backspacing to stay within stock specs for the 4wd, less if you want the rims to stick out more. Also, check out tirerack to get a decent idea of offset as I'm not as familiar with that as I am backspacing.

After a quick search (on tirerack.com) it looks like offset is anywhere between 25mm and 50mm depending on the wheel.

25mm difference is less than an inch.

4wd backspacing is 6". That means that there is 6" of space between the inside lip of the rim and the mounting surface of the hub.

Offset is how far off from the center line of the rim the mounting surface of the hub is.

When I said "depending on the wheel" I was referring to the wheels listed on tirerack.com that will fit your truck. Some were as low as 25mm positive offset, some were as high as 50mm positive offset.

So your BMW rims may have had the right offset but the wrong backspacing, or the offset may have been wrong as well. Tirerack lists offset for the 22's at 18-21mm and backspacing around 5.8".

How far were they sticking out in front?
