Can't remove key in park 99 Blazer floor shift
Hi,
I've read through the forums and could use some help. I have a 1999 Blazer, trailblazer edition, 4wd with a floor shifter.
I can't remove the key when my floor shifter is in park. Sometimes it works (20%) and sometimes it doesn't (80%). I push up on the button under the column to release the park lock Solenoid.
My horn also works intermittently. But that's been happening for a while while the key removal problem is relatively new.
So, either the solenoid is bad or the wiring is bad.
I need to either remove the park lock solenoid, replace it or find the wiring problem.
I could use some help figuring out how to get to the solenoid and where to check for bad wiring.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The solenoid should be in steering column. It could be failing, but there is another cause of your problem, and its easier to check. Remove the console trim cover, there is an interlock switch and linkage attached to it that is suppose to move back and forth when you press the button on the shift handle. You should be able to see the interlock switch when you lift the cover trim off the floor, press the button on the shift handle and see if the linkage attached to the switch moves. The linkage(actuator) is known to get gummed up and stick. Spray some electrical cleaner on the linkage, and press the shift handle button quite a few times, that should free it up.
BTW keep it in park while doing this, it shouldnt take long to do.
If the linkage is okay then the solenoid more than likley the problem.
Also my horn was doing the same thing, there is a horn relay in the relay box under the hood on the drivers side. I replaced it and my horn works fine.

Thanks for the advice. When you say, " Remove the console trim cover" is that the whole console or just the section under the shifter that contains the gear indicator (PRND)? Does that just pop out with a little prying?
Thanks for the tip about the horn relay. I'll replace it and see what happens
