Default '03 New Distributor issues

I have a 2003 Blazer 4.3L that started to "squeel" under the distributor while running. I pulled it out and it was pretty much shot. Lots of play and even rust on the top of the shaft under the rotor. It was the original with 64k Miles on it so I decided to replace the whole thing.

I found a fantastic bargain online..$48 ($61 w/SH)New for everything. Dis, rotor, cap and module. What do I have to lose, I thought. Too Good To Be True?

Well, it runs fine, but continually throws a P0016 error. Moved it forward and back till it wouldn't even run. Pulled #1 Plug and found TDC, still errors. Then I put the old module in and still errors.

I put the old distributor back together and dropped in. No errors and runs fine. So I had them ship me another one and sent that one back. Replacement came today and it wasn't really a surprise that this one throws the same errors. P0016

Am I missing something? Do I have to reset something maybe? I can't think of anything else. The Blazer does run fine with the new ones, just throws the error immediately. I clear the errors with my OBD-II scanner and it comes right back,,,before I even get her warmed up.

Figure I'd check here before I send this one back for a refund and go buy one at the local name brand parts store.

Thanx..Bill

P0016 - CKP/CMP Correlation Error

This code will set whenever something has changed either in the link between the crankshaft and the distributor or a sensor change. The CKP/CMP Correlation is a value that the PCM uses to calibrate the readings of the CMP & CKP to each other. Whenever a link in the system is changed, this value must be changed. Sometimes you get lucky and it is within spec for the current correlation value.

A CASE relearn will teach the PCM the new correction factor and solve the problem.

Thanks, that sure sounds like the kind of issue I was wondering about. I've replaced a few distributors in my life, but this is the first one in a vehicle from the 21st Century! Last one was a '96 Jeep and no Relearing issues there although I have heard of this.

Glad to help.

Any mechanic with a high feature scan tool can perform a CASE learn provided they know they can. Most shops charge a minimum 1hr shop rate charge for this though...

I called our local shop and tried something he said before I bring it in. It didn't work, but I noticed something. I eyed up the rotor contact, exactly at 9 O'clock. The new one drops in a bit forward about 9:30, not much but defintely forward. Going back a tooth is way behind. The old one does have some play in it.
I've only had the vehicle for about 10K miles, so I wonder if it may have had issues before and it was relearned rather than replaced by the previous owner.
Luckily, I have a local shop with all the newest electronics, so he'll get to the bottom of it for me and I'll report back. I'm back to the Cherokee for towing the boat this weekend!

Well, My mechanic just called and chewed me out for buying junk auto parts online. The distributors are manufactured wrong and are 20 degrees off.

I said I thought it was a Too Good Too Be True price. At least I'll get my money back to go towards the correct GM part.

Lesson Learned...

Well that sucks. Where did you buy it from. Might keep someone else from taking "advantage" of that "too good to be true" price.
