Hi guys
I blew something in the bottom end of my 4.3 vortec code W engine a week ago. Did some hunting around and found an engine off of a 1994 blazer. The code matches my engine. But the motor has a vertical distributor and not a horizontal one as like on mine it is also off a 4x4.
Is this going to work? If so what will i need to change out if anything.
Thanks again for your help guys.

Plug wires for EDI connect horizontal on the cap, (1996 and newer) and the engine has a crankshaft position sensor with a tone ring on the crankshaft inside the timing cover. On the HEI they connect vertical, (1995 and older) and there is no crank sensor or tone ring. They are not interchangeable.

So im back to the drawing board then? So i have a place to start I need to search for either a 95/96 vortec with horizontal plugs?
Is there any way that I can make this 94 engine work that wont be to much of a rikaround?
Dang these things are confusing.

Early 1995 4.3's are CMFI with HEI. They have vertical plug wires on the cap and inside is the ignition module, pick up coil, tone ring and rotor:

If the plug wires are horizontal on the cap, it has EDI with a crankshaft position sensor mounted to the timing cover, (replaces the pick up coil) a tone ring on the crankshaft, (replaces the tone ring in the distributor), and the ignition module is mounted next to the ignition coil near the right rocker arm cover. The only things inside the cap are the camshaft position sensor and the rotor. No image, but here is a drawing of the EDI distributor:

I can't say for certain if HEI equipped engines will accept a tone ring and the new style timing cover. I don't like guessing and I'm not a gambler but, I can imagine that it would. Let me know if it works

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess the reason i really wanted to know was because this engine came with a good transfer case as well.
But to make it easier, I think im just going to source one with the proper dist. and save myself a little frustration. Jeez these couple years of GM are a pain in the butt.
Thanks again guys!

Im sure its not all GM but the other automakers made changes also has the technology prgressed everything became a pain in the but. They dont want us DYI to work on our vehicles.Take to the garge or dealer.
I know the 94 will except the newer style timing chain cover I doubt the early 95s will either.Best way to find out is call an auto parts store with the make of vehicle and year of engine and see what timing chain cover the come up with.
