Default 1998 Blazer ABS Problem

The problem seems to happen mostly when I am coming to a stop (around 4mph) and turning left-like pulling into a parking space. A loud grinding noise from front driver side and the brakes lock up for a few seconds, then kick in. I have gone over parking curbs and nearly hit fences or other things in my way due to the car not stopping. I have read other forums where this seems to be a typical problem with 98 4x4 Blazers. My husband (mechanic) has changed brakes all around and transfer case-but can't seem to find the problem-he is getting ready to dismantle the ABS system all together. Any suggestions?

it is the abs sensors in the hubs up front most likely. check them for corrosion and cuts in the harness. till you get it fixed pull the fuse in the fuse block mounted above the driver wheel well. that will stop the false sensor reading.
also have a scanner hooked up to check the system, has to be done by brake shop.
i know the scanners they have at the local part shops here wont read abs codes.

could be bad abs computer (mine was) local scrap yards have them for around 50-75.00 (what i paid) easy to swap out to.

do some searching for false abs, covered alot around here.

hope that gives you a start.

Another thing that will cause your problem is a front hub bearing going bad & developing play. This is what happened to mine. Frightened the life out of me when it started happening - I nearly rear ended a car one day. As warthogdriver says - pull the ABS fuse until you get the problem fixed, it won't do any harm - just the ABS light will be on all the time. The play in the bearing upsets the critical air gap between the sensor & the toothed ring inside the hub. When I got round to replacing my bad hub it came with a new ABS sensor fitted to it. I took the sensor off my old hub to keep as a spare. Incidentally, replacing the hub is a pretty straightforward job. Took me about 90 minutes whch I though was good seeing i'd never done one before - reckon i'd get that down to an hour if I had to do another one now that I know what's involved..
