Which wheel rotates??

It should be the driver's side. The passenger side should lock when its wheel is moved.
The best you will get is one front wheel and one back wheel pulling. That is if you don't have the G80 locker.

This is the way I check the front axle..

Put the right front axle up on a jack stand.

Start it up. Tranny in park. Put it in Hi 4wd. Then get out and see if you can turn the front driveshaft. No, the transfer case is locked in. Yes, you have an encoder motor, TCCM or transfer case issue.

If no, then move down to the right front wheel. Does it Freewheel or does it move a little then lock? If it freewheels, then the issue is on the vacuum side of the 4wd system. Bad cable, actuator, Vacuum switch on the transfer case, hoses or even possible the shift mechanism inside the front differential.

It is does lock, that proves that everything is working properly.

Good luck and keep us posted...

If it locked in with both wheels off the ground it should rotate both wheels in opposite directions, just like the rear wheels with both off the ground. If the tranny is in neutral. If it is in Park and Hi 4wd, there should be a little movement but not much in the front wheel then stop.

If the passenger side rotates freely with the cable pulled and the tranny in park and the TC in 4Hi then the problem is with the fork or gears that mesh the axle shafts together on the passenger side. Or possibly there is a cable problem, broken or a problem where it connects to the fork.

Don't know. I have yet to do that. I, however, replaced everything else from the Transfer case down to the actuator cable, except the TCCM and encoder motor..

Mine is a 2002 Crew Cab with 204K miles on it bought brand new off the showroom..
