Hello all,

Could you engage it by pulling on the shift fork in the front axle tube? Does it make any difference if you are turning a wheel while you try to engage it?

Only once could i pull out the shift fork and put a pair of vice grips on to hold it out seemed to work. yes i tried turning the wheels as well. I pulled it apart again, and it seems as the casting is jamming up the fork, the hole for the fork sort of looks oblonged. I think the diff has had it ...So here is my next delemma... I got a used front diff from a guy but before I buy it how can i tell if it is the same gear ratio as i take out? Will it tear out the diff if they are different??this one is out of a 96 jimmy it looks the same execpt the two axels have plates on the ends which i can probley pop out and put in my cv joint axels ?? mine is a 2000 blazer with 370000 + KMS on it or 230000 miles..... every thing else still works fine....

You will definitely tear something up if the gear ratios are different. If you cannot check the RPO codes off the donor vehicle, then you will need to engage the front axle and spin the diff. If you hold one axle output stationary, then spin the other twice, counting the turns of the pinion shaft, you will get the gear ratio.
