Default 2000 GMC Jimmy ABS?

Just bought a 2000 GMC Jimmy 4x4. The guy I bought it from said it needed a new ABS sensor somewhere, however there are no SES or ABS lights "on". The problem is 99% of the time when applying the brakes (and not hard) once I get to between 10 and 9 mph the ABS kicks in. I'm certainly not locking them up, its usually just a gentle slow stop I make. Could this be an ABS sensor? I do know the front brakes are in definite need of replacement (both pads and rotors). Let me know your thoughts or if there is anything I should try.

Thanks!

If a sensor is bad it should throw a code.
check all your caliper to bracket bolts and make sure they are not loose.

A sensor can read low at lower speeds and cause this issue...

Brakes - Low Speed (below 5 MPH) ABS Activation

Yea, I just realized it actually happens between 10 and 9 MPH like clockwork... If I pull the ABS fuse temporarily will this cause any adverse problems aside from no ABS whatsoever? I only ask because it gets interesting when the ABS engages at EVERY stop...

Still run through the diagnosis in the link I provided above. I bet you have either a dirty reluctor ring and/or sensor or possibly an increased air gap on a sensor. It's easy and can be done with only a multimeter and a jack.

Awesome, thanks for the info guys! I pulled the fuse for now because it was driving me crazy on my daily commute to and from work. On Wednesday I am going to do the brakes and try your suggestions.

Thanks!

Thanks for that - I'm hoping it will cure this problem on my 2000 GMC Jimmy.

From the bulletin

Use ONLY Rust Penetrating Lubricant, P/N 89022217
What actually is this - can I use something like WD-40 or Kroil or ? or should I buy a container of this from GM?

Thanks!!

Roger

Any penetrating oil will work at getting in there to help get things loose.
