Of course my seat is stuck in the upright position and won't lean back. For most this not a problem however, for me it is. I am 6'9" and need it to lean back. I tried grasping the metal rod that is sticking out of the seat with a pair of vice grips to adjust the seat and it doesn't work. What else can I do? Other than buy a new seat or buy the replacement handles?

you can buy a replacment handle for it. they make replacment handles that slip over the broken rod sticking out of the seat.

Your not getting what I'm saying. The rod is sticking out and I can turn it with a vice grip and the seat still DOES NOT recline.
This is what is sticking out of the seat.

Sounds like you broke the mechanism up inside. You can either tear into it and see what's wrong or get a whole new recline mechanism.
