Question 2001 4.3 Sometime Rough Idle, Mostly OK

Hello, We have a 2001 2wd auto. We have had this Blazer for nearly two years. Lately, about 10-20% of the time, the Blazer is hard to start and idles roughly. You sometimes have to give it gas whilst the other foot is on the brake to keep it from stalling. This can happen in the morning, or right after it has been recently driven without this problem. You can turn it off and immediately start it again and it may (or may not) go away. It appears to drive fine after you get rolling, but the problem returns when you slow down to stop.

I did do a search here and elsewhere and see that it could be the fuel pressure regulator leak; however, would a faulty fpr come and go like this? Most of the time it starts and drives fine. No SES light comes on whilst this is going on. We do get an occasional O2 sensor code, but never whilst this situtation is present. The mpg does drop drastically while this is going on.

Also are there fpr problems on 2001's? Seems like I read somewhere this only occurs on 90's models.

Thanks for your help!

try replacing the fuel filter first. then do a fuel pressure test. if this is a spider-injected motor (i believe it is) pressure should be around 43 lbs. if it's low or erratic, you may need a new fuel pump. also the spider under the intake can be a problem.

The pressure needs to be 55psi at an absolute minimum and should not bleed off after the pump turns off. Follow the instructions found in the link located in my signature below to test the fuel pressure.

Other preventative maintenance that could help a condition such as this would be cleaning the EGR valve, MAF, and throttle body. Much of which is covered in how-to articles in the Tech Article (DIY) section. The index of posted articles can also be found in my signature.
