Default 2001 ABS Module problems.....

I am experiencing the same ABS module problems with the ABS & Brake lights flashing with the loss of power...Is it possible to disconnect the whole system and drive it while I find the part? Don't really have $1000 right now to shell out for a new one....hoping to find a used one or have ModuleMaster rebuild it....anyone ever have this done by them. What was your turn-around time?

Have you had the system scanned to see if the module is the actual cause?

Are the lights on the dash the only symptom you have? What else is happening?

Here is a quick run-down of what happened.....

1. Broken upper ball joint severed the ABS cable.

2. Ball joint breaking severed the ABS cable on the hub assyand was re-soldered.

3. Mechanic unplugged both plugs from the EBCM

4. Truck ran fine for 6 mos.

5. Replaced the hub assy and re-plugged in the EBCM.

6. Started the truck before work Friday and the ABS light came on and at about 55 m.p.h., the ABS and BRAKE light came on the dash and the speedo started jumping and the truck started losing power....

7. Slowed down a little to exit and the lights went off and I was able to drive home (15 miles) with no more problems...

8. Researched it here and it seems to be a bad ABS module.

9. Last week I unplugged the sensor on the back of the tranny and cleaned it VERY well with contact cleaner and re-plugged it back in.

I am out of ideas....truck shifts fine, starts all the time, idles perfect at 900 r.p.m.'s. doesn't stall and die....Not sure what else to check...the only ODB code I have is a PO410 code for the air pump.....Only thing I can think of is a bad connection or ground somewhere since there was 6 mos. inbetween problems....but where? I will put the ODB back on it today and see if there are anymore codes.....

Ok here are the current ODB codes...

1. PO410....which I am assuming is the A.I.R. Pump
2. PO440......Not sure what this means.....

I have the same code on my 01..and yes, it is a malfunctioning air pump (sorry, I forgot the official terms ) I had it checked out a my local shop, 440 dollars for the part and 180 for labor. The owner is a family friend and good, honest guy so I know the price is fair.

In fact, the ABS and Brake Light problem is an extremely common problem on 01's. I've talked to SEVERAL people who have the problem..all of them have 01's. A new ABS module runs like $1000 bucks. There was actually a thread about this a couple weeks ago and the guy found a website that will rebuild the module for $130..

There is a guy on eBay that sells the pump AND motor for under $200....that should take care of the PO410 code....and if my problem is the ABS module, I plan on having ModuleMaster rebuild it for $150.....waiting to hear back from Kyle....he was wondering what codes I had.....

I doubt that the problem you experienced is an ABS problem as it would not cause you to loose power (well, unless it activated which you would know). If the engine partially stalled or stumbled enough to cause the voltage to drop, it could cause the lights to come on. You can check over the front wheel speed sensors with a DMM set to mV-AC. The reading needs to be >250mV-AC when the wheel is rotated.

A typical code reader will not access the EBCM for ABS codes... You will need to get someone with a full feature scan tool to access it and check for codes.

Have a look in the Tech Article (DIY) section for the run downs on the codes you posted.

OK...the "stumble" was almost like it was fuel starved for a second....but as soon as I slowed down to exit everything went away...the lights and the stumbling...I drove it back at 55 mph for about 25 minutes with nothing......this problem is keeping me from trusting my truck to get me to work...I am never sure when it will happen....does ANYONE have ANY ideas what could be causing this? The stumble only happens when both the ABS and BRAKE lights come on.....I am at a loss.....

This could be the start of an ignition switch failure. Did your security light come on at the same time as the stumble? Have you ever had trouble starting it?
