Default 4.3 rebuild?

I purchased a semi-blown engine for parts, I used the parts I needed and have much of the engine and parts. The bearings and rings are bad--mileage is unknown. The piston bore still have the honing marks and I'm considering rebuilding it. I'm not planning on spending allot of $ on machining if I can avoid it. Crank kit w/ bearings, Gasket set, rings, and misc. parts will run about $800 versus $1,800 for a rebuilt one. I'm concerned about the cyl. bore having worn out of spec as I'm not interested in boring it 40-over as I would have to change the pistons and rods. Any advice or assistance in the method and tools (cheap) needed to verify the need for boring 40-over?
