If you have the 3-button switch, you may be able to remove the encoder motor and then move the encoder and verify that the channel output is proper per the information found in the Tech Article post originally created by error_401. You also should be able to rotate the motor portion using a 1/2" ratchet. If you feel any spots where the motor doesn't spin when you move the output, the gear inside likely looks like this:
