Default 5-Speed Need help

Hi I'm almost for sure buying a 1995 Blazer 4.3L 5-Speed 4X4. It doesn't shift right now, I've been told by the owners that it's because a roll pin came out of where it was supposed to be. Could this cause it to not shift? here are a few pics

This is with that little sliding part the shifter connects to in. (what exactly is that sliding part called?)

Here is one with that sliding piece out. That little hole infront of where the shifter goes is apparently where this roll pin is supposed to be. Now what I want to know is, is there supposed to be a roll pin there? If so what exactly is the part(like fork roll pin, or something different?) Also what does it do and how is it installed?

Is that part supposed to slide in and out like that? Or is that something that is supposed to stay put if that pin is in there? I have no idea what I am doing here, or what any of the parts or repair procedures are. So any help with anything on how to fix it, what it is, or anything like that would be awesome. Sorry if the pics are huge, I don't know how to resize them. Also I'm hoping to fix this in the guys drive way before I take it home so i can just drive it home. I can't swap a trans in his driveway, so unless it is a nessecity for me to get a new trans please don't suggest it. If this can be fixed easily just by replacing the pin thats all I need to know, is what and how. Sorry for being so long winded. Thanks in advance.

That's the shift socket and rail(rod with hole)in the picture. There should be a pin in there where you were told.

Okay so how do I install the pin? And is there something on the bottom of the rail that the pin is supposed to go in also? If there is how would i get it into where it needs to connect to? Thanks

The pin should be a straight through. You can verify with a small mirror and look at it from underneith. If it is, then you'll want to have a small magnet handy and hammer & punch to drive the portions of the pin out through the bottom (you'll need to align it properly with the hole in the shaft first). Then drive in a new roll pin of the required length.

That's as best I can do without having the thing in front of me to advise further.

Get yourself a chilton is the only advice I would give you, because I don't know either. But the chilton will explain all of your questions to you and at 20 bucks it'll be an investment that pays for it self.

Yeah I'll be getting one of those pretty soon I hope. Does anyone have any idea if the pin connects in to anything else below that rail?
