Default '95 Wont Start... but wants to...

Hey guys... new to the forum...

Just drug home a '95 blazer thats been sitting for a few years. Its a one owner with 90k miles on it... loaded... hardly a ding on it and the guy wanted it out of his way...

After dragging it home... I went over a few things on it... checking fluids, etc.. unhooked the fuel filter and let the fuel pump puke the 12gallons of 5yr old fuel into a container. After the tank was empty, I put 5 gallons of fresh fuel in the tank and cycled the pump a few times. Hooked the fuel filter back up.

Pulled the dist. cap and cleaned the contacts on both the cap and rotor.

Hit the key... oil pressure came up quick... it sputters a bit but wont fire off. I used a spray bottle and sprayed fuel into the tb... it would start and run for a few seconds then die. I figured it was most likely a pump/reg. issue... so I hooked up my pressure gauge...

Key on... 54-60psi depending... ~61psi while cranking... held 60psi after cranking for a few minutes... after about 8 minutes.. it dropped a few psi...

I then unhooked the gauge from the test line and cycled the pump a few times with the test line in a bottle... getting clean fuel at the test port. Unhooked the tester and hit the key... again it sputters but wont fire. Spray fuel into the intake and hit the key.. it fires and runs for a few seconds then slowly sputters and dies... When it sputters but wont fire... it sounds like its hitting but just not enough to stay running on its own...

So... what am I looking at? Junk injector spider or reg. or pump... or...?

Is there any way to clean the injector spider?

Thanks guys
-Chris

95 used two different systems. Do your spark plug wires plug in vertical or horizontal on the cap?

If it hasn't run in 5 years, the poppet valves in the injector lines might be gummed up not allowing fuel to squirt. You'll need to remove the plenum and spider injector assy and clean all 6 nozzles and hope for the best.

It uses the horizontal style dist. cap... I was leaning towards pulling the spider for cleaning but didnt know if there was a good way of doing it.

All that crappy fuel that you flushed out was a great idea! Running the fuel pump will flush the lines and the regulator, but, the problem is that crappy fuel is still in the injector, the spider lines and poppet nozzles. You'll need to spray each poppet nozzle with carb cleaner. The problem is you won't be able to flush the injector and spider lines. If cleaning the poppet nozzles doesn't help, you'll need a new spider injector assembly.

Edit: When the nozzels are removed from the manifold, crank the engine and watch the nozzles, each one needs to spray.

I got it to run this afternoon... oddly enough I didnt do anything to it..?

I hooked the battery back up after being on a charger all night (alt. wiring issue) and hit the key... it fired easily... ran crappy but progressively got better as it ran... still has a dead miss.. but it was driveable.

I took it around the block after letting it run for a good while and checking things over... everything seemed to work good... trans shifted good.. etc..

I did notice that when I got it fired.. it was belching black smoke every time I cracked the throttle.... that seemed to clear up a lot after driving it around...

I do know for sure that it needs a full tune up... all fluids, hoses, belt, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc..etc..

Oddly enough... even with a VERY noticeable missfire... no check engine light... battery light and ABS light... but no CEL...

I'm thinking that sitting overnight with fresh fuel up to the injectors/lines perhaps broke something loose... sounds odd yes but thats the only thing I can come up with as to why it would fire today and not at all last night all things being equal.

I'll give it another run tomorrow after work and see if anything changes... I did go on and dump a can of seafoam in the tank which only had 5 gallons of fuel in it... should do its job.

We'll see what happens.

Well.... its hitting on all 6 now... running smooth as can be... Ive got some vac. lines to replace (dry rot from sitting) but it dosnt have much hesitation... dosnt seem to be missing at all at the moment... starts fairly easy...

I suppose it was just varnished fuel in the poppets and its finally getting cleaned out.

I snuck it down to the car wash and cleaned all the mold and crud off the paint... has a ding in the front bumper that is pretty small... and a ding in the back bumper... other then that, I cant hardly find a rock chip on the thing... leather interior... power everything... the only thing I wish it had was heated seats...

I think I did good on this one for only $500 with the odo. currently sitting at 90k miles.. 4 wheel drive to boot.

I'll get some pictures of it at some point... not a big fan of the cream color... but I'm not gonna be picky at this price point.

Thanks guys
-Chris
