Default 96 4.3 blazer 4x4 changed starter and blew alternator?

I tried searching similar threads but nothing exact. I had to change the pain in the butt starter out on my blazer. I got the starter out without having to remove anything else. Put in the exact same starter, turned the key and something popped under the hood I'm guessing. Smoke was coming from under the hood, I popped the hood and it smells like I burnt the alternator. Turn the key again and nothing. Lights and fuel pump come on but no key at all. I really can't see if wires are touching anything else on the starter. I'm going to get the alternator tested now. Does this sound about right? I will pull the starter again tomorrow but just want some insight first just in case I don't have to pull it again. Thanks

Might be a break in the positive battery cable? If the large battery cable has failed it may try to pull a high current through the smaller charge wire that leads to the battery. Alternator might be fine, but the wiring could need replacing. Kind of a weird problem...

I had it wired wrong. had the little wire grounded on starter. had starter tested its fine. put it back on and nothing. i have power. fuel pump kicks on but no clicking or anything with key. checked fuses all ok. dont know what i messed up. Is it possible it's the fusible link between the battery and starter? Doesn't look burnt or anything but it's close enough to where the puff of smoke and burning smell came from. Tried jumping the battery and didn't help, now my battery is draining down...
