Default 96 auto trans shift lever seal

I saw a post on here a while ago about replacing the shift lever seal on the side of the tranny. I can't seem to put the correct combination of words together in the search to get the information.
Does anyone have tips or tricks to replacing this seal. I recall someone saying the pan has to be dropped and the shift lever/shaft removed. Someone else said it wasn't necessary that it can be done externally. The front driveshaft looks like it might be in the way also should it come out? Any info would help, I only have the Chiltons manual for the truck and of course that kind of info isn't covered in it.

I am not sure what thread you are talking about...

It can be replaced without dropping the pan, but it may be a royal pain if you do not have the proper tool.
