My '96 did that when I bought it last year. Fluid would puke out of the vent line beside the tranny dipstick and smoke on the exhaust. The dipstick was so wavy from being forced into the tube that the level was reading wrong and the tranny was overfilled by over a quart.

I straightened the dipstick out and let the extra puke out, it's kept the right level for 8 months now and I have driven it across the country with not a drop lost.

Not saying this is your problem, but something to check. The top of the dipstick may be rusted from condensation which makes it weak enough to fold into S- bends when it's pushed in.
