Default 96 blazer wiring problems

Ok, I have been searching forums and looked through just about every forum and thread about wiring problems and i haven't found anything like mine.

I have a 96 blazer 4 door, just bought it off a guy about a month ago, he said before i bought it that there might of been problems with the fuse block but me not thinking just wanted to get rid of the family wagon and get the blazer no matter the problems. well about a week of me having it and enjoying it to the fullest i was told that my brake lights werent working so i started the investigation, it has taken me 2 weeks and a full dashboard removal to try and track the torched brake light switch wires, after finally getting the wires fixed i noticed one thing that i had 3 brown wires going into the connector, i paid no attention to that because i thought it was fixed now. well no. after getting it all back together i found out that they STILL werent working. after thinking it over i decided to check the trailer connector in the back and found that the guy before me had NO clue what he was doing and jacked the wire all up, so i cut the thing off and bingo lights work.

well now the other issue. i have no parking lamps and no instrument cluster illumination. i figured out that i was blowing the number 3 fuse every time i turned the headlights on and i'm wondering if one of the those brown wires goes to that.?

if any of you could give me a suggestion or a diagram that would be greatly appreciated (i have the chilton's book and i can't track the wire from that being that every wire is seperated and not grouped up like i need)

Well, I own a '96 and have done a little wiring work on it.

I think you are on the right track by scrapping what the previous owner did. However, you may have been a little premature in not checking each wire individually. I know that can be a PITA, but it's the only way to know for sure exactly where the culprit is. But fortunately I think I can help you.

Obviously one of those wires you cut was a part of the parking light assembly. Go back to the place where you cut the wire, and test each individual wire end. It would help if you have a partner who can turn on/off the parking lights while you work.

My suspicion is that you removed the wire that was grounding the parking lights. Take each cut wire end and touch it to a known grounded spot while the parking lights are turned on. Once the lights work, you have found the ground wire. Secure it, and you're done. But this is important: WEAR GLOVES, just as a precaution, in case one of those wires is juicy. As an added precaution, you could use a voltmeter first to see if a wire has juice before grounding it. I don't believe there's much risk of shocking yourself with that particular harness, but it doesn't hurt to make sure. Also have a few extra fuses around, in case you blow one or two while testing.

If this doesn't solve the problem, come back and post a reply right here, so that others can help you. Good luck.
