Remove the distributor cap so you can see the rotor. Using a socket & ratchet on the crankshaft bolt, manually rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the lines are like the image below, AND the rotor points to the "6", (or very close) on the distributor housing. If the rotor is not lined up with the "6", rotate the crankshaft clockwise one revolution, and the rotor should then be pointing at the "6", (or very close). Remove the distributor, and install the new one so the rotor is pointed at the "6" when the distributor is fully seated against the intake manifold. If the distributor does not fully seat, you'll need to turn the oil pump drive using a large blade flat screwdriver so the distributor shaft will engage the oil pump drive shaft. DO NOT move the crankshaft, or operate the starter until the new distributor is installed and fully seated against the intake manifold.

Yeah. Same way I do on my 78 Trans Am. But with these 4.3 the spark plugs behind steering shaft are a pain. The dealer did something to it so my steering wheel is clocked about 45 degrees to the right. That's for the drawing.

Provided the distributor was timed correctly to begin with: If you follow those directions, there's no need to pull any plugs.

Well I know my TA doesn't like to be manually turned over without the plugs being out. But ether way.
