97 4WD problems, not engaging
I have some recent trouble with the 4WD not engaging.
I can hear the relays clicking, I have checked the actuator and it is moving and the membrane is shrinking but it seems that it doesn't pull the wire the full length. It only moves about 1/4" and the membrane has a bit more to move.
I have pulled on the wire and it feels a bit rough, it doesn't move freely.
I believe that it doesn't pull enough to engage the 4WD.
When selecting 4WD LO it goes in to low gear. It seems that the front axle isn't hooked up when selecting the 4WD option.
Can the wire get stuck or having problems moving properly? Do I need to change the wire or can it be lubricated?
Thanks
Jan

I'll be following this.
First off, you might check that there are no vacuum leaks as perhaps the vacuum is only sufficient to pull on the cable partially?
Also, I seem to remember people manually pulling on that cable to get the front axle to engage. Have you tried that? Did it work? If it did, then maybe it is the vacuum actuator.
