Default 97 blazer wont start

I recetly acquired a 2 door blazer that doesn't start. The starter on my 2wd engages the flywheel for a second, then it spins freely. I tried all types of shims with little or no improvement. So now Im thinking the teeth on the flexplate might be worn down since it doesn't appear to be warped. Can anyone give me a measurement for how deep the teeth are on the flexplate? Or any other input on why it wont start?
Thanks

Have you had the starter tested? I'm thinking its not staying engaged, pulling the drive gear back in, and letting it spin in the starter housing.

Yeah, the starter tested good. I even tried a new one from checkers with the same grinding. Hmm
