Default 97 front end noise

Starting a little over a week ago when I would make a right hand turn I would here a clicking noise from the front left. A few days later it started getting worse, it would click on a slight to full right turn. Now it clicks constantly unless I make a let hand turn. At first it was barly audible now it is fairly prominent.
I brought it to midas however it was raining and they did not here the noise. They noticed the shock mounts were loose and tightened them up however this did nothing. I have noticed the noise is less for about the first 50ft of driving, but then starts right back up.
What I can tell so far: it is not rpm related as it doesnot do it at a standstill in neutral, stops at about 75mph(could be overpowered by ambient noise), I cannot feel it only herar it, car does not pull
Any input would be apreceated, I commute 100 miles a day and its getting worse.--thanks

4X4? Sounds like CV joints. I'd check the ball joints while you're at it.

Ya its 4x4. The ball joints are about a year and a half old, I jacked it up and they don't seem to have any play up or down, left to right. Any other way to check?

Sounds more like CV joints then. You have what equates to two "half axles". Check the boots for holes and try wiggling the shafts themselves.

As far as the ball joints. You may want to use a 2x4 or something the wedge the wheel around as they may feel tight by hand but still be bad. Before you do that though makes sure to get some jackstands or something more substantial than a jack under the truck so it doesn't fall on you.

Ok ya, definatly not ball joints. I engaged the front in both hi and lo. NOT a good idea I couldn't turn past a 1/4 turn of the steering wheel and it started clunking LOUD. Is this something I should attempt to repair/replace myself?

Wait. You locked it ito 4 wheel on dry pavement and turned it while moving forward? You can create some pretty good binding that will cause bad noises and if done too much cause damage to the front differential.
Can you wiggle the shafts themselves? Are the boots over the joints leaking or caked with muddy grease?

I agree with oisinirish, mine was doing the same thing about a week or two ago. The boot on my CV was completly shot. I would get that replaced as soon as possible before it really messes something up on your truck.

It definitely sounds like a bad CV on the left side. If you have a humming noise on that side while driving that changes pitch with your speed then you likely have a bad wheel bearing as well. More often then not they go bad around the same time as the CV shafts.

Both are something that you could change yourself assuming that you have the tools to do so. I just did CV shaft, wheel bearing hub assembly, ball joints and shocks on my blazer last weekend.

Thanks for the help. However I hecked it out found nothing, no leeks or cracks. I brought it to midas, they have no clue. I did find however the noise is more in the middle of the truck, pretty much dead center. When up on the lift there is no noise? Same left and right deal though. At this point I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Thanks

Well. OK. Could possibly be universal joints. And you can't always feel them when they're bad by hand. Could be a loose mounting bracket for the T-case or tranny? Why turning would affect any of these not too sure. The only other thing I could think of would be a loose or broken exhaust hanger.
