Default 97 oil guage/shifting issue

Was driving along today and decided to pass a slow moving car. Gave it about 3/4 throttle passed the car and slowed back down to speed. everything seemed fine.

About half mile down the road a car turned in front of me so when i went to give it gas the motor revved up and I noticed my fuel guage was on 40 with high rpms, the truck didnt seem to want to shift gears. It went into the next gear but now my oil guage read 20 and when i slowed to a stop went to 0. when I got pulled over I checked the oil it read fine. Just had it changed four days ago.

I aslo noticed a kind of ticking sound/rotating soud when accelerating. But, at cruising speeds or idle its not noticable.

Check engine light is on I will try to have it read tomorrow if I can get it to auto zone without blowing it up first lol

So list of problems:
  1. not wanting to shift under medium/heavy accel
  2. oil guage reading 20 at cruising speeds
  3. oil guage at 10-0 at idle

I would get a new oil pressure switch (behind distributor) to see it that is the problem or oil pump or bearings would be the bad news

I'll try the oil pressure switch. Is there anyway to test it before I buy one?

yes, either you, or a shop hooks up a mechanical gauge to get proper readings.

Alright where would I hook up a guage and any specific type of guage?

The gauge would go into the port that the oil pressure sending unit currently occupies. You need to use a gauge that is capable of reading ~60psi. A liquid filled gauge will give you a more consistent reading as it won't bounce around as much, but they are more expensive.

Ok cool sounds simple enough.

Anyone got any ideas what would cause the truck to run lean while all this is going on?

Had a friend that suggested a oil pump any ideas?

Please exercise patience here. A 'crisis' on your part doesn't put you above the rules of the forum (see #4) so unless you have waited 24hours, please do not bump a post. Thanks.

An oil pump will not cause the engine to run lean.

Take a look here for the diagnostic tables & explanation of the code:
P0174 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2

You can also do a search on 'P0174' to see what other threads are out there while you wait for someone to respond.

If you do need to bump a post after waiting 24hours, please list what you have found/read/tried in the mean time.
