99 Blazer- Should the fuel pump run all the time? This one was replaced 8 mo. ago, but noticed it ran continually. Yesterday it cashed in. Getting an exchange, but have read so many messages, that yes they do, no they don't. Anyone?

 

If the ignition is on, yes. If it is off, no.

 

Ok, thanks rriddle3. So many people have said that it should only stay on for up to 15 sec to build up pressure, or it could be the relay. Then others say it does run continually. Hopefully this one will last a little longer.

 

If you aren't using delco or delphi then they won't last long lol

 

I agree CAT. You think I'd learn the 3rd time to spend the extra $100 for a better pump. This again is the Airtex, here in Ontario pumps aren't too cheap. My main concern was on the 96 we have, I don't remember the fuel pump being so noisy. After it primes it goes quiet, but this last one in the 99 from day 1 was humming loud. And being female, if you ask in a garage, they look at you and it's always. Bring it in and we will check it out. They laugh when I say, No thanks I can check it out myself. Anyway it's done, let's see how long it goes. This is an awesome site for great info......

 

50lb_cat is right..i have had 2 airtex on my 2002 blazer since april last one failed this week...went back to AutoZone and told manager NO MORE AIRTEX..the A/C Delco pump is the same price..He was nice enough to cover my labor since had only been 3 months since replaced last one..I was in a bind on first one only brand I could find that day ..Never Again

 

About 2 yrs old I had to replace my oem pump after 160k it worked fine one minute next dead. I myself have always had good luck with Delphi parts and yes it cost more but hopefully I'll get at least 150k out of it.

I learned along time ago a lesson about submerged fuel pumps in tanks for an old guy who told me that with any fuel pump you shorten it's life by not have a good clean fuel filter in the car. Because with a dirty filter the pump has to work harder. Now he said with submerged fuel pumps they are designed that the fuel in the tank around the pump help cool the motor in the pump. The reason he pointed that out was I would always run around with a 1/4 tank of fuel or less. He said if you at least keep the tank at 1/2 full the fuel would help cool the pump. He actually used alot of big words and half of them went over my head. But it made sense to me what he was saying and since then I change fuel filters 10-15k and try to keep the tank at least at 1/2.

Mind you it was 25 yrs ago and I was playing with a '89 Turbo Coupe that had 2 fuel pumps on it. One was the in tank lift pump and a high pressure pump and I had gone through 4 Airtex and 2 other pumps also on that car. I had learned alot about fuel pumps and how to break them and what pumps to buy.
