AC Compressor Problem?

AC Compressor Problem?
This site has always been a great help to me in the past, and now I have another question for everybody.
I have a 2001 Blazer that has never had cold a/c so I finally bought a recharge kit hoping a simple recharge would fix the problem. But nothing is ever simple with this truck.
When I started the engine and turned the ac on full blast the first thing I noticed was the compressor would run in like 5 second bursts and then sit idle for about 5 seconds before starting up again. I then hooked the pressure gauge to the low pressure test port on the drier. The pressure was very low (10-20) while the compressor was not running but when it kicked on the pressure would build to 70 before falling back down when the compressor turned off again.
Bad compressor? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for the help.

Short cycling like that usually meens you are low on freon. Start adding it and the compressor should stay on after about 1 to 2 minutes of adding the freon. The kit gauges aren't really accurate for pressure readings. But they get the DIYer close.
