bad smell

Default bad smell

I have a rotten egg smell coming from my exhaust.... What is causing it.

any help out there? thanks Linda

The most common cause of rotten egg smell coming from the exhaust is a failing catalytic converter.

What vehicle do you have? Need that information to move your post to the appropriate tech section.

That smell is most likely hydrogen sulfide, which is being formed due to a faulty reaction in the catalytic converter. Its possible the engine is just running very very bad and overwhelming it, but as swartlkk said it is most likely a bad cat.

thanks for reply.. I am visiting my brother in LA. so now maybe he can fix it, before I drive back to CA.

Bad gas is also a culprit of the rotten egg smell. Try filling up at a different location. If you still continue to get the smell, it’s a bad cat converter.
