The 95 factory manual says the hub isnt removed, just supported to not damage the brake line...

BUT..

My recommendation is that when doing a specific job like this, also do/ replace everything around it, i.e. the whole wheel end assembly, brake calipers and all, especially since parts are getting harder to find. All the other parts are old, dried out seals etc.

GM / Delco boxes now have Chinese parts inside. Ive been buying only from Dealers for my 95 S10 and until this year, been getting all real NOS GM Delco parts. Apparently theyre getting scarce.

These are still very good, valuable vehicles, its $35,000 to replace it with a Colorado. That money buys parts to rebuild the whole truck!

I've replaced them without removing the hub. Just support the lower control arm with a jack under the lower ball joint before starting so you can adjust the height when removing and reinstalling the upper ball joint. If you unbolt the ball joint without supporting the lower control arm the suspension will give you a nasty surprise when you separate the upper ball joint from the knuckle.

Be sure to inspect and grease everything else while you're in there.

...which means "can be a dangerous job..." if the lower arm isnt supported, theres nothign to hold the SPRING in and it may come out of there and get you...

Ball joints shouldnt fail in 120K miles, the ones in my 95 S10 at 307K are still good. Lack of maintenance?

I too have been thinking along the same lines as this regarding replacing parts while I can get them if I think they may be harder to find in the future.
