Default Blazer Won't Start

Ok I have a 1998 Chevy Blazer 4.3 Engine. I have been having some problems with the dam security light flashing everyone once in a while preventing it from starting. Sometimes when I am driving the Security Light will come on. If I adjust the steering column and then restart the vehicle the light is off. I was told to put some of that powdered graphite lubricant in my ignition lock which I did. Immediately after doing so I tried to start the vehicle and NOTHING. I blew the lock out with electrical cleaner and still will not start. When I turn the key its a little hard to turn sometimes I have to play with it a little to get it to turn. All the lights come on, gauges move and I hear the feul pump whining the car just won't crank. I also don't hear a clicking noise when I turn the key.

Any help please? Is this an ignition switch problem? Are these really expensive to replace. Had the vehicle towed.

This definitely sounds like the start of an ignition switch failure. This part is not expensive and can be done by a DIY'er in an hour or so. It is actually quite easy so long as you have the proper tools (long shank torx screwdriver if I remember correctly). I believe it has been detailed in atleast one post in the past.

Does the '98 have the passlock key system ( with the chip in the key)?
Do you have a spare key and will it start the truck?

....just thinking.....

The mechanic just called me. He told me it's the alternator. Does that sound right to anyone? Would a dying alternator trip the security passlock feature and prevent me from starting the vehicle sometimes as it has.

Does an alternator show signs of it dying or just dying. I haven't noticed anything unusual in my electronic operation of my vehicle.

No. The chip is not in the key.
