Exclamation Brake/Parking Brake light constantly on?

Hello, been having a problem with my brake light in my 98 blazer for about the past week.

As said, about a week ago, I was dropping someone off in front of a store, I had my foot on the brake, when I heard/felt a kind of pop, and it felt like something gave way. Ever since, the dash light has been on non-stop, and the brake pedal feels odd. It feels like I have to put significantly more pressure to get it to begin braking, and the pedal has to be practically on the floor to come to a full halt. The braking process in general doesn't seem as smooth as it used to.

I don't really have a great knowledge about car stuff, other than the basics, so if someone could explain what this is in pretty basic terms, it would be appreciated Also, a general idea of how much it would cost to fix, and if I can put off getting it taken care of. (Currently laid off)

Thanks!

Are you leaking any brake fluid? Did you check your brake fluid level on the reservoir?

checked the fluid levels, the whole front of the fluid container was empty. Went to see my girlfriends dad, who know a thing or two about cars, and asked him about it. We filled the container, and checked for leaks. He had me pump the pedal while he check each wheel. Nothing was visible, and there is no smell from it anywhere. He doesn't think its leaking, but rather that air got in my lines somewhere.

Still not entirely sure on that though, some more input from you guys would be great!

Air in your lines can make it difficult to brake, as air is compressible, and Brake fluid isn't. This would make the pedal mushy, and have to travel further to make up for the air being compressed in the lines. Hope your brakes are fine now.

Sounds like what my problem is. Sometimes the brake pedal feels better, generally when I first start it up, don't know if that makes any difference. We had planned to bleed the lines tomorrow, but with the snow coming we will probably put it off until Monday at the earliest.

Oops, forgot to post a follow-up to this. Eventually took it to a garage, ended up there was a small leak in the line, and my master cylinder was going. Had both replaced. Hopefully that'll keep this from happening again!
