a/c fan question

Stock is a single belt driven clutch fan. It doesn't care if the AC is on or off, it simply locks up so the fan is fully engages with the engine RPM's if the engine warms up enough.
Adequate for the most part, but personally I think it's inefficient in hot (like 90 degrees and up) climates.
Me living in hot and humid Florida did as many do and swapped in an electric fan. I used the Dodge Intrepid style fan. Dual fan, dual speed, can wire them however you wish. I originally had one speed wired to a temp switch I installed into the passenger side head so they would kick on when the engine reached about 190. I hooked the other speed up to the AC clutch circuit so they kicked on with the AC to pull air over the condenser. I eventually dropped this complex wiring setup after having the temp switch fail twice and the AC being inoperable for a short time due to a leak, so the fans wouldn't kick on at all and I almost overheated the truck a couple times. Instead, I wired them to a 3 position switch in the overhead console. Had one position fully off (center), one position was for low speed (down), and the last position was high speed (up). I found that even on a 90+ degree day here in Florida, I can sit and idle as long as I want with the AC on full blast, and have ice cold air and the engine temp never raises above thermostat open temp with just on LOW speed, so that's all I usually run it on. I reserve high speed if I'm towing (which is rare... usually just a loaded down moving trailer, not like a boat or car hauler or anything), and it works FANtastically (no pun intended)

I did a write up and crude wiring diagram if you check out my build thread. I never have overheating issues with my intrepid fans. Also they are cheap, I picked up a set from the local u-pull for about $20.
