Carbonized upper plenum from '98 Blazer

Carbonized upper plenum from '98 Blazer
When I removed the upper plenum from the intake manifold, the inside of both was covered in varnish and/or carbon as was the spyder. What is the best method to remove the crud without damaging the plastic?
