Default Catalytic converter

My Cat is maybe clogged because its rattling inside so i was thinking of gutting it. please no comments about the environment. so would a gutted cat hurt performance versus replacing it with a straight pipe? or is it the same? and how will sound be affected by gutting the cat vs. a striaght pipe? the reason im asking is cause i want to gut my cat cause its rattling and i plan to leave the stock Walker muffler on it. so whats the differences on the cat?
