check engine light out

My check engine light does not come on when the key is turnedto on.Do I just need a new lamp? If so what's next step?

A bi-directional scan tool can activate the lamp. If it does not illuminate, then you have to dig deeper.

You could try popping out the cluster and test the lamp.
