My 97 jimmy 4x4. I also replaced fuel pump, hoses and relocated fuel evap system with new fuel lines to new spider, had to replace gas cap too.

 

When you changed the pump, was it the entire assembly? Or just the pump? There is a tube from pump that can crack and loose cyphen.

 

The gas tank is normally vented to the atmosphere through the normally open vent solenoid so the gas cap doesnt matter during normal operation. When you have a bad gas cap it causes the evap system to fail the routine ECM test when it closes the vent solenoid temporarily along with the normally closed purge solenoid and then you get a code.

It was a complete module assembly. but I have not checked that everything is connected properly.
If the battery return doesn't fix anything, I should take the tank apart and see this.

What matters is consistent and proper net voltage to the pump. This means that the positive line must be clean right at the pump and the ground must be good. The pump sees the net voltage between the power and ground wires so a bad ground connection can reduce the net voltage.
