is this a cable problem or a shifter column problem?

What are you working on? The '78 Blazer in your 'garage' doesn't use a shift cable.

It sounds like a problem with the shift cable. Can you disconnect the cable at the transmission and move the shifter through the appropriate range of motion?

Check out the schematics on THIS PAGE (courtesy of Compnine.com). The OE part numbers are also listed if you click on the applicable schematic (floor shift - AC Delco 15713353 or column shift - AC Delco 15721261).

Best to keep the information in your garage applicable to the truck you have or put the proper information in the post requesting for help.

You can try disconnecting it at both ends. Then shift the transmission from park to low, measuring how far it moves from one to the other & noting if it gets difficult to move at any point (other than the detents themselves). The cable should move more than the transmission shift lever does.
