Default crank sensor

long story short, truck wont start, tried the starter fluid in the intake, no start
friend had me look at the crank sensor. lot of gunk on it. wiped off and tried to start. started instantly and then cut off. lightly tapped the sensor with a screw driver. immediately started...lasted 6 seconds and shut off

does this mean crank sensor is bad?. was told i can check ohms...idk how
also how do i properly check voltage of wires that lead to it, thinking there might be a short if its not a bad sensor
