I have searched the forum and can't find a clear answer. What bulb is used for dashboard illumination? Are they type C74?
I would like to convert my dashboard to LED but I only want to pull it once.
Thanks

Hey! I believe the dash illumination lamps are #194 as are the warning lamp bulbs (SES,ABS etc) The type you are referring is an industry ID # for such factors as globe size/shape and base configurations(push-in or twist) I may be wrong but that C74 sounds like the industry ID to me. I have never seen a chart crossing industry ID #s to normal part #s (ie:1157,3057 etc) Keep workin' the net! Good luck! step66

is this the base type that holds the illumination lamps on the dashboard?
Looks like a 1/4 turn type.
Thanks

If I remember right, there are two different size bulbs used in the cluster. The ones for illumination just might be #194, you can check with a GM dealer and they can tell you for certain.
In your signature it says, "4.3L Non Vortec". The stock engine in 1996 was a Vortec, what did you install, TBI?

They are all 'Vortecs'.

1996 4.3L has Central Sequential Fuel Injection, (CSFI).
1995 and older "W" engines have Central Multiport Fuel Injection, (CMFI).
The 4.3L "X" has the injectors located at the intake ports, (no poppet valves).
All "W" and "X" 4.3's are Vortec.
The 4.3 "Z" has Throttle Body Injection, (TBI) and is not a vortec engine.

Getting back to the original post, if I use a T3-1/4 base a WLED-x4 base
from "superbrightleds.com" for illumination & the related trouble indicator bulbs, I should be ok?
Don't understand the 90 & 120 degree beam business, why not 360 degree dispersion without a laser beam in your face effect while night driving.
I think I will have to order 1 each and see the "effects" I get. I do have a bench 12 volt PS.

Sorry to hijack there, I was just curious. It's not that big of a deal to pull the cluster out and check the bulbs. That way you'll know for sure how many and what number bulbs you need.

If I remember right(I replaced mine last month) they are pc32 and pc194 on the 96. I know there are 4 pc194's, and I believe I bought 16 pc32 and only used 15 of them. I know there are 16 pc32 slots though. One of them is the upshift arrow for manual trans though. There are also 3 32's in the a/c controls. I didn't go beyond that because that was all I needed though.
I can't help with the led conversion because I used standard pc bulb's from NAPA. My dealer wanted $14.99 and $15.99 per bulbs where as NAPA was something more like $2.49 and $2.99 per bulb.
