Guys!
Need some help. I have a 97 Jimmy with some issues. It wants to choke a bit while idling and likes to stumble and choke when I try to accelerate. I took her to a mechanic and he is saying I am in need of a distributor/distributor cap/rotor/wires/plugs in order to get her running right again. He quoted me $600 for parts, labor, and tax. Money is a bit tight right now so I was hoping to buy the parts online myself and either do the install myself or have one of my more mechanically inclined buddies do it for me to save me some cash..
Would anyone be willing to help me with part numbers for all these items to ensure I make the right purchases. I'm finding parts online for well below what my mechanic is charging but I am worried I may not purchase the right item. Any help would be wonderful. I am able to turn a wrench and read a Haynes manual but I am worried about proper part selection.
Thanks!
Steve

600 for a tune up?! Did the mechanic appear to be on drugs?
Is your check engine light on, for starters. Let us know that and we can help you more without having you throw money into it for it not being the problem .

Mark the position, then pull out the distributor to look at the gear. You are checking for worn teeth on the gear. If the teeth are worn then its wise to replace the distributor with the one below. Its all aluminum and inexpensive $41.50
Skip White Performance Detail Description
Its a good idea to check the cam retard after adjusting the distributor.
Another thing you may want to check is fuel pressure. The fuel gauge can be rented from a auto parts store if you don't have one. There is a sticky at the top of this forum on what the fuel pressures should be:

Plugs: AC Delco 41-993 gap: .060"
Distributor cap: AC Delco D328A
Distributor rotor: AC Delco D465
Plug wires: Autolite 35-6151 (better than AC Delco, half the price)
These parts are good for 100K miles. If the parts on your vehicle are not these brands, or they have more than 100K miles on them, or you are unsure of either, replacing them is a good place to start. As mentioned, the Skip White distributor is an excellent choice, but use the AC Delco cap & rotor. Toss the cap & rotor that comes with it, along with the Haynes manual, in the trash where they belong. Checking and adjusting camshaft retard is mandatory after distributor removal or replacement. Post all 4 readings for fuel pressure and leakdown, and we can help you analyze them.
