Drivetrain noise. Can't solve the mystery.
Pettyfog - I'll say again.. one guy with car experience will probably solve this in less than ten minutes and shops are not the only place to find them.. another hint.. he is probably older than twenty yo
just saying.
Find a local car club and seek out geezer enthusiasts who actually wrenched on their own cars.
I like this. Nothing wrong with education. But education will never replace expirience!

i agree with the checking of the driveshaft... but dont just stop at the u joints. if they check out there is one more thing to look at there...drive shafts are balanced just like tires they use spot welded wieghts check the shaft for clean spots as if one of the weights has fallen off... also i would look into your flywheel/converter the speed up and slow down noise makes it sound like this could be a prob also. also when you pull the driveshaft one thing that could give you a hint on wether or not it needs work is the condition of the tail case on the tranny check for an egg shaped opening and or leaky seal when the drive shaft is installd.. hope this helps.
i just wanted to add one more thing... you said the tires dont match front and back.... did you put used tires on the front...if so putting a used tire on, on the wrong side going the opposite direction that it has ben going for 15,000 miles ... this can and will cause vib, noise, pull, shakes shimmys.... etc. if you not sure try changing them out with another set or moving front to back see if the noise moves or changes at all.
Update!
I think I found the problem. Its the u joints. I noticed that one of the caps on the tranny end was slightly lower than the others. After spraying some liquid wrench silicone lube on on them, I took it for a drive.....the humming noise was muted and the grinding was gone. Drive shaft coming off this weekend. hopefully this takes care of it.
If you happen to hear a dull thud after Saturday, don't fret. It will only be me beating my head against the wall if this doesn't fix it
No, the fronts are new and matching and the rears are twins...both sets are new...just different brands... Didn't have the money to get them all replaced at the same time hence the mismatch
