Default E-brake

Please forgive my ignorance on this issue. I am not a stranger to brake jobs and am very mechanicly experienced except that I have not owned a vehicle with rear disc brakes before. For the past couple of days, I have been hearing a scraping noise in my rear driver's side wheel area when I first start moving and hear a noise like a coffe can with rocks in it when I hit bumps. Yesterday I kicked that tire and I heard what sounded like small pieces of metal settling towards the bottom. I looked through the open spaces in the wheel and saw that I had plenty of brake pads left and they were seated properly. My question is, could the E-brake have came apart? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it act as a drum brake in the inside of the rotor with a dust shield behind it? I have spent all day writing a paper for school and am going to take it apart to look at it tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience that may be able to share some wisdom.

your correct, the parking brake is one shoe the grips to the inside of the rotor, if your hearing a scraping noise then its probally rust building up on the backing plate and rubbing on the rotor, or it could be the anti-rattle clips on the caliper scraping the outter rim of the rotor (thats what my 98 was doing). my sugestion is to take the brakes apart, clean your parts up, lube your sliders and get what every parts you need. the parking brake rarely comes apart, but i have seen the shoe hold down clips rust off and cause the shoes to move around at their free will. be safe. use jackstands and let us know how it goes.
