Default Electric Problem

I have a 97 Blazer w/ 4.3. I was driving along and the dash panel indicator lights went out and the engine died. After a second or two everything came back on. The next day I went to start it and the lights in the dash did not come on and the engine would turn over but not start. I turned the key off then on and the dash lights came on and it started. The next day the same thing happened exept it wont start when I turn the key on and off. The radio, headlamps, and blower motor all work fine. Just something electrically that controls the indicator lights and the fuel pump.

Had a similar situation with an early Model Hyundai Excel, where it just died while driving. The dashboard lights blinked and then went bye-bye. Electrical diagnosis pointed to the alternator, or more precisely, to the voltage regulator built into the alternator. I would get the vehicle to your local AutoZone and have them bench test the alternator for you, or you can pull the alternator and have them bench test it in the store. This is a free service and you'll know right away if you need a new part or if you can rule the alternator out of the equation. Is the battery weak? If the alternator is crapping out, the battery is not getting charged properly.

In my case, I rebuilt the voltage regulator in the alternator. All it took was to de-solder and re-solder in a new diode. Pretty easy repair if you can find the right parts.

Good Luck.

Sounds like you are going through the same thing I went through. My altenator died so driving around with a dead altenator soon killed my battery. Next morning it starts fine but 5 miles down the road at an intersection it died when I kept my foot on the brake...I can also remember it was running rough without my foot on the brake.
