You are looking for spark jumping from the wires to anything else. Do it in low light and you'll see it if it's happening.

While you've got the motor out, I'd change the timing chain and gear set. Easier to do it out of the truck.
Also check the distributor drive gear for wear. If it's worn replace the distributor or if you can, replace the gear.
