A Few Questions - LIM replacement

I started to replace my lower intake manifold gaskets and have removed almost everything. I still need to disconnect the fuel lines and remove the distributor.
After reading a few posts I have questions on the distributor. I did not make sure that cylinder #1 was at TDC on the compression stroke. On other vehicles, in the past, it was a matter of not turning the crank while the distributor was out. I have now found instructions from alldata that says if the LIM is removed the engine should have #1 at TDC. Is this really necessary or can I line it back up after marking it? Should I mark the distributor base and LIM with an awl or something that etches so that I don't lose my mark on the LIM?
The fuel lines look fairly easy to disconnect, will I need new gaskets or washers when reconnecting?
Any other tips or pointers from anyone's experience?
