Setting up a rear gearset after replacing the bearings isn't always the easiest thing. You can end up doing more harm than good if the contact pattern isn't proper. I would say this is NOT something to do in the street. A press is often necessary to remove the inboard pinion bearing from the pinion as well as the carrier bearings from either side of the carrier.

As far as parts, any parts store should be able to get the relevant parts. You'll need a new pinion seal, the inner/outer pinion bearings, the carrier bearings, the outer wheel bearings, and seals. You might also want to get a pinion & carrier shim pack in case you need to change the shims around.

What is wrong with your axle that makes you think that it needs a complete rebuild?

i was just worrying about the outter wheel bearings and figured if its necessary to do the whole ring n pinion set as well. dont get me wrong, if i dont have to change bearings then thats great but i hear a cling in the rear and a loud thump on low bumps... everything is completely out of the truck... empty. so whats the cling and the thump. how to check if bearings are bad in rear. i did have 1.5 in bolt on wheel adapters on at one point.... are they safe?
