Default front end clunk

im getting a clunk when i go over speedbumps slightly faster than average.
if i go slow it is quiet.
i dont notice any slop in the steering, the clunk sounds to be in the center so i dont think its shocks, or both shocks at the same time...(rare)but shocks usuallt rattle more, this sounds like a big worn out bushing...
any ideas where to start?
im gonna get my friend under there tomorrow and see how it goes...unfortunately i threw out my back again, so im out of commission, he will have to be my bit...i mean helper.

its a 02 2dr 4x4 sls.

I would take a look at the hood hinges. GM released a TSB on clunks from the "front end" that detailed installing conical washers onto the hood hinge bolts to tighten up the hinge joint. To diagnose, take a rag and wad it up on the coil near each hood hinge just enough to put tension on the hinge and not enough to bend things. Drive under the same conditions and see if the clunk is still there.

If the hinge pins check out good, take a look at the tbar cross member bushings. Both of them are somewhat common problem areas that can be hard to find if you don't know where to look.

skid plates too if you have em. a good way to find this stuff is with a piece of wood. jack up 1 tire and use the wood as a lever and jerk up under the tire hard and listen for it. or a rubber mallot and smack the the tire on the rubber of course. will help narrow down which side its on.

its not the hood...it is 100% from under the car.
doesnt clunk when i hit the bump, it clunks when im on the way down the bump, basically when it is unloading the front to back pressure.
i guess im going to have to lift her up and see where the play is coming from.

not sure wha the crozzmember bushings are or where i would locate them.
im starting to think i actually saw the lower control arm bushings worn out...ill have to double check but i remember looking at them when i was changing out the pluggs and thinking they were geting a little ruff...

Check your shocks Monroe reflex shocks don't seem to fit tight in the shock tower causing clunking noise

control arm bushings and ball joints...my girlfriends truck does the exact same thing. took it to a front end shop and they said that the lower ball joints are getting ready to go. which reminds me...i should get around to replacing those....
