Kinda strange!

When the tank is FULL the fuel gauge bounces for lack of a better term
It's worse when the turn signal is on

I just bought this truck and haven't looked into it at all as of yet

I have seen this happen to the volt meter on other vehicles but never the fuel gauge

Any ideas on where to start?

Yeah.. tell us if it bounces IN TIME with the turn signals or at random but just more.

Possibly instrument panel ground. How are other guages? Temp? Actually the voltmeter probably wont, but if it does it's a clue.

 

It bounces in time with the turn signal

When Full it bounces all the time, but it's exagerated when the turn signal is on


After it's down under the Full line it only bounces when the signal is on but you can barely notice it as opposed to VERY noticable when over the full line

All other gauges are rock solid and seem to be functioning properly

 

I dunno what's involved with pulling the instrument panel but what I would do is take it out ...without touching any connection, if possible... and remove at least one TS indicator bulb. Then, careful to avoid shorts, turn that directional on and see if it still does it.

My experience with GM electricals is that in just removing the panel, the problem may go away*.

But at least you'll have an idea where to start.

* Correction, as suggested below, May SEEM to go away for a while
And
If removing the panel requires dropping the column and disconnection of the Multifunction and ignition switches, I'd suggest not doing it yourself.

 

Common issue= I would NOT pull the whole colume until you do some reseach first!
The dashes of these units are complex! If this is your daily driver-be prepared to give up a day or 2 to investigate the situation and repair! -And NO the problem Never goes away with a GM unit!

 

I have similar issue, i had fuel pump replaced about 5 years ago ac delco brand, my low fuel level indicator must not have been wired correctly, because it never worked once the pump was done.
About 2 years ago, the fuel indicator strted bouncing around, all other instruments okay, i think its related to thr float that is part of fuel pump system. Its been like that for about 2 years with no real problem. Just make sure the fuel level is accurate.

 

my 97 blazer 4 door 4wd does the same exact thing!!....it sat for a year and a half before i got it...so durring its hibernation this has started happening....its annoying to never know exactly how much fuel i have, but when i but gas in i always reset my trip meter to be safe, personally on a hunch, i think it has something to do with the fuel pump/ sending unit... if and when i replace my leaking gas tank and sending unit i hope it solves this problem. i highly doubt its a gauge issue...probably a ground somewhere

 

Thanks everyone! It's not something I'm really worried about, just kinda annoying. I have a few things to give a once over this weekend, maybe the fuel gauge will make the list. I'll update when/if I ever solve this

 

any update on the gauge problem? ive added a 1200 watt amp...and boy does my gauge bounce now....im going to check my ground wires from the engine today and see what i can find

 

If memory serves, this was the beginning of the end for the sending unit in mine. I just used the trip odometer until the inevitable happened and had to replace the fuel pump. Did that last year and I'm still not used to having a functioning fuel gage.
