Fuel odor at start up

Fuel odor at start up
My wife is complaining she smells gas every time I start my truck in the garage, if I have a window down I can smell it as well. I have check for leaks around the filler, canister, filter, and manifold connections and can't find anything. Doesn't seem to do it if I just cycle the pump. Should I just throw a canister at it and see or is there something else I should be looking for.

I understand but this is a simple test that rules out half of the potential causes.
Another possibility is a faulty gas cap but that probably sets a code.
If not these things and you have checked for external leaks then it probably is the evap system. Finding line leaks is usually done with a smoke machine. If not that then the cannister itself or the solenoid(s). Topping off at the pump damages the cannister.

Is the check engine light on? My Jimmy had inconsistent raw fuel smells, with no actual fuel leaking. The last time I had the gas tank down, I broke off the nipple on top of the gas tank that attaches to a hose running to the evap canister

Found it, full blown fuel leak where someone cut the metal fuel line about three inches from the filter towards the pump and spliced it back with fuel line and hose clamps. So what is the proper repair for this? Can I get ferrule connectors and re-connect the lines or do I need to find a replacement fuel line.

Go to the help section of your auto parts store. You can buy high pressure vinyl fuel line hose, and metal to vinyl compression fittings. I've done many repairs this way and have never had a failure. Compression fittings are great for fuel lines but NEVER for brake line repairs.
